Tilda Swinton is a British actress who graduated with a degree in Social and Political Science from Cambridge University in 1983. While in school studying literature and writing, Tilda also participated in school productions, which developed her interest in filmmaking. Swinton then moved back to Scotland and joined the Traverse Theater. A year later, she began performing for with the London-based Royal Shakespeare Company. During this time, Tilda Swinton appeared in the production of “Die Massnahme” and “Man to Man.”

After meeting director Derek Jarman, who offered Tilda with a chance to work on film, Swinton made her movie debut in the 1986 film “Caravaggio.” She then appeared as an alien android on the 1987 movie “Friendship’s Death.” Tilda Swinton then performed at the stages of Berlin, London and Vienna for the production of “Mozart & Saleri.” However, it was in Tilda’s performances on the British movies “The Last of England” (1988), “The Garden” (1990) and “Edward II” that truly made her acting skills shine. In Edward II, where she played Queen Isabella, Tilda Swinton earned a ‘Best Actress Prize’ at the Venice Film Festival.

Tilda Swinton continued to choose complex roles throughout the 1990s, appearing in “Orlando” in 1992, “Wittgenstein” in 1993 and the documentary “Blue.” She garnered critical acclaim on the 1996 movie “Female Perversions,” followed by the fantasy drama film “Conceiving Ada” in 1997 and the biographical drama “Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon” in 1998. Tilda Swinton continued to appear on independent films such as “The War Zone” in 1999.

In 2000, Tilda Swinton appeared opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Beach.” The following year, she played the role of Margaret Hall in the 2001 movie “The Deep End” and earned over a dozen nominations, including a Golden Globe nod, for her work on the film. By 2005, Tilda Swinton has included impressive movie credits to her portfolio, which included a role opposite big names such as Tom Cruise in “Vanilla Sky,” director Spike Jonze in “Adaptation,” Ewan McGregor in “Young Adam,” and Michael Cane in “The Testament.” However, it was her role as angel Gabriel in the movie adaptation of the comic book “Constantine” that made Tilda Swinton an international star.
